Tent

In Essence the question is: What is it. Where Abstract is a search for beauty beyond the recognizable things from the real world; Essence doesn’t try to go beyond the visual world; but tries to capture the pure heart of the matter. The photo on top is not ‘a tent’; but ‘tent’. It’s about the principle. The principle of a tightened canvas, that is characteristic for all tents.

Essentie is voor mij: met ‘zo weinig mogelijk’ laten zien wat iets is. Anders dan bij Abstract is het isoleren hier niet bedoeld om de aardse werkelijkheid te ontstijgen; maar juist om tot de zuivere kern van iets uit die werkelijkheid door te dringen. De foto hierboven is niet ‘een tent’; maar ‘tent’. Het gaat om het principe. Het principe van gespannen doek dat kenmerkend is voor ‘tent’. Het gedoe met haringen in de grond en slikranden is hierbij niet van belang. Het recht van boven komende zonlicht; meestal niet zo goed om bij te fotograferen, is hier juist essentieel voor het voelbaar maken van het principe.
